Ledbury Town Council Commemorates 80th Anniversary of VE Day with Community Celebration and Service
Ledbury Town Council is proud to report a moving and memorable day of remembrance and celebration on Thursday, 8 May, as the town came together to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
A large number of residents gathered at the War Memorial for a heartfelt service, honouring those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War. The strong community turnout reflected how deeply this day continues to resonate with the people of Ledbury.
We were especially honoured to welcome Air Commodore, Tim Howson DL, who attended as the representative of the Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire. His presence brought great significance to the occasion and was deeply appreciated by all.
The evening concluded in a truly memorable way, with the lighting of the Church Tower at 9:30pm, symbolising Ledbury’s participation in the national beacon lighting. It was a joy to witness the tower illuminated against the night sky, a powerful symbol of peace and unity.
Ledbury Town Council extends sincere thanks to all who helped make the day so special, including: Ledbury Brass Band, Mary-Anne Keyes, who conducted the service, Ledbury Royal British Legion, Members of St Michael & All Angels Church, Ledbury Community Choir and The Ledbury Singers.
Looking ahead, the next commemoration will take place on Friday, 15 August at the War Memorial at 6:30pm, marking the 80th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day). This will be followed by a special service at St Michael & All Angels Church on Sunday, 17 August at 10:00am. All are warmly invited to attend and reflect as we honour this occasion.
This day reminded us not only of the sacrifices made 80 years ago but also of the strength and spirit of the Ledbury community today.
