The grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund

The grant of £220,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund was essential to allow us to proceed with the Masefield Matters project.  It pays for salaries of two staff during the key activity phase of the project and for the costs of a wide range of activities run by professionals as well as volunteers.   It also contributes £60,000 towards a final memorial to John Masefield.

What is not covered by the NLHF grant?

Our agreement with NLHF requires us to raise £22,000 (10% of the grant) in matched funding.  This is our first hurdle and the focus of our fundraising from November 2026 to March 2027.

Once this hurdle is cleared, we will seek to raise up to a further £40,000 towards a lasting memorial to John Masefield, the nature of which will be decided in the second half of 2026.  The more money we can raise, the more options we will have in deciding the nature of that memorial.

Because the Town Council is not a charity (and therefore not registered for Gift Aid), the John Masefield Society (JMS) has kindly agreed to receive all donations to the Masefield Matters project.  The JMS is a charity and registered for Gift Aid. All donations to Masefield Matters via the JMS will be passed on to a restricted fund within the Town Council account and may only be used for the purposes of this project.

How do I make a donation?

It would greatly help to reduce administration if you were prepared to make an electronic bank transfer (BACS).   If you prefer to make a donation by cheque, this should be made payable to The John Masefield Society and marked “Masefield Matters” on the back.  This may be taken to the Town Council Offices or posted to:
