Civic Delegation Visits HMS LEDBURY

PRESS RELEASE

Civic Delegation Visits HMS LEDBURY on Friday, 27 June

On a bright and sunny day on Friday, 27 June, the Chairman of Ledbury Town Council, accompanied by her secretary and the Masefield Matters Project Team, had the privilege of visiting HMS LEDBURY— the Hunt-class mine countermeasures vessel affiliated with our town. The delegation was warmly welcomed aboard by the ship’s Commanding Officers, who led an extensive and engaging tour for the visitors.

The visit included an in-depth exploration of the ship’s state‑of‑the‑art sonar systems, mine‑hunting equipment, and daily operations carried out by the Portsmouth-based Second Mine Countermeasures Squadron. On deck and below, the group were told about the impressive capabilities and enduring legacy of this naval asset.

Opportunities were seized to explore ways to enhance the bond between HMS LEDBURY and her namesake town. Meaningful discussions with the commanding officers examined collaborative initiatives, ranging from educational outreach to civic engagements that would reinforce the ties between ship and shore.

A highlight of the visit involved the Masefield Matters Project Team, who shared current progress and future plans with the ship’s officers. They discussed public involvement in forthcoming John Masefield memorial activities and how HMS LEDBURY and its servicemen and women might play an important part in the celebration of Masefield’s work.

Cllr Harvey presented a leather bound 1921 edition of Masefield’s famous Saltwater Ballads and his Ballads and Songs to the Commanding Officer and ship’s company as a commemoration of the visit.
