The Ledbury Town Plan

 

 

After several years of preparation, the Town Plan has been adopted by Ledbury Town Council. The plan has been created in response to a Government initiative to encourage local participation in the process of planning for the sustainable future of any town or parish. Ledbury has been the first of the market towns to undertake this task and has consequently been a trail-blazer. Little support was available initially and we had to learn by trial and error. Later in the process, we received invaluable help from Chris Gooding, Herefordshire's Parish Plan Officer, from Lynda Wilcox of HALC and from Pauline Striplin of Community First.

The plan is the outcome of exhaustive public consultation with all sections of the community and has been compiled by a Working Party, which was formed at the inaugural public meeting of interested parties.

Collating and analysing the data from the various surveys took much longer than we anticipated: we underestimated the sheer volume of response material and eventually had to employ additional professional help in order to complete the process.

 

Although teething troubles have been many and varied and the compilation has taken longer than expected, we sincerely hope you will feel that the completed plan reflects the views you expressed. At its core stands this "Vision for Ledbury":

 

The Town Plan identifies all that is different and unique about the community in which we live and sets out a vision for its future. Its objectives are:-

 

1.  To create a thriving and sustainable Market Town, which recognises the needs and aspirations of all who live in it.

 

2.  To ensure that local character is taken into account when considering proposals for development.

 

3.  To conserve the environment and enhance it for those who live in it, and to protect its heritage.

 

4.  To strive to balance the needs of community, commercial, industrial, leisure and tourist interests.

 

5.  To encourage local participation and to work in partnership with the Unitary Authority.

 

6.  To produce and to continually review this Town Plan, in order to manage change and achieve the above principles.

 

The Town Council will be holding an Open Day in the near future, when all those who are interested will be able to view the Ledbury Town Plan.
