Bill the Bell & his wonderful wife Enid at the Queens Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in Hereford


We are very fortunate to have Bill Turberfield as Ledbury's Town Crier. He is considered a real asset to the Town with his sense of duty, devotion and loyalty. At any Town event Bill will be there carrying out his duties with professionalism and attention to detail. He is a regular sight within the Town Centre entertaining both the visitors and locals with his usual cheery smile and a twinkle in the eye. He has a gift for making you feel special and always brings a smile to your face.

Bill has a illustruious history as is described below.  

Normany Baron Richard de Turberville married Gloucester Abbey, signed Nobilis Richcardo de Turbertuulla (Latin).
Battle Abbey Role lists Norman Sir Payne de Turberville, companion to Normany Duke William.
1090s    Battle of Glamorgan, Sirs Payne and brother, Robert, de Turberville.
?1150s    Sir Hugh de Turberville *Sheriff of Hereford.

King John sent Welsh born Sir John de Turberville * to Bere Regis, Sovereign abode search.

Sir John de Turberville** attacked Hereford
with Sir Hugh de Turberville** Sheriff of
Hereford, Sir Gilbert de Turberville and
Crusader, Sir Robert de Turberville of Ewyas
Lacy. Robert gave 30 great oaks for houses in  
1300s    Sir Richard de Turberville held Hereford, deed mentioned
1360s    Richard de Turberville, Canon of Hereford died.
1730s    Dorset records.   Scribe enters Turberfield for de Turberville.
Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy is
accepted by historians as based on the
Bere Regis, Dorset, Turberville family which
settled there in the 1200s, succeeding families
prevailing for 500 years.
1930s    Birmingham born, William, WW2 evacuated.
1950s –
RAMC, then National Health Service.
1960s   Married Enid June Flowers, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, five children.
2000      Writer, poet, historian, William landed a Ledbury Town guide position.
2002     Of many applicants, Ledbury Town Council appointed William, Town Crier.   (Hereford Journal typed him Bill the Bell)
Across the free world, invitations means regaled Bill and Consort wife, Enid, partake in Town Crying Competitions, first cry Ledbury.
Destinations included Australia 2005, six weeks there, the Ledbury flag, town crier miniature and assorted valuables gifted.
